Borderlands Review

Borderlands is a futuristic first person shooter developed by Gearbox Software. Humans have colonized the galaxy, including the planet Pandora. Many people have emigrated here in search of the mining riches promised. The planet is an empty wasteland with lawless thugs roaming around causing havoc.

The animation certainly does impress. The first thing you'd notice is the eccentric graphics, everything has a hand drawn two dimensional look. This adds a lot to the game as you won't get tired of the same old graphics that everyone has seen before. Walking around you notice that everything in the foreground still does have a 3D look as you get the same hand drawn view when looking at something head on, from the side and back.

The gameplay is very easy to get into, after watching a introduction movie and selecting a character (either a hunter, a berserker, the siren, or a soldier) you get a feel for the movement, which is nothing new for a shooter, and the interaction. Thousands (over a hundred of thousand?) of guns are gathered, most with different statistics such as reload time and damage rates, so you'll always be finding better guns to use while throwing away the rusty metal.

Personal skills and stats are a major part of the game. Customizing a character is easy when you reset the stat points and redistribute them to completely change the game, as well as earning more when you level up.

The multiplayer has a co-op mode that lets 4 players team up to gather more powerful weapons. If your in the middle of a friends game in co-op mode, your progress is also updated in your own game, this means that all players will need to be around the same part of the game.

Downloadable content is planned, "The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned" will bring new items, enemies and quests to complete and should be released before Christmas.

Defiantly something new, defiantly worth a look at. It's not just a plain old shooter, there are elements of a role paying game included. It doesn't take itself to seriously either. Some parts seem rather comical like the little robot that introduces you to the game singing and dancing around when it's serves no use. Fun to play and should have some longevity for anyone looking at value for money.
