Just another Need for Speed car racing release? No. This one takes a different approach being more of a simulation racer, instead of the usual arcade style game that fans have become used to for some years now. Developed by Slighty Mad Studios for Electronic Arts, Need for Speed Shift has taken a different step towards driving realism.
72 cars for 18 race tracks await including the Bugatti Veyron, McLaren SLR, Koenigsegg CCX, Corvette ZR1, Ford GT, Nissan Skyline GT-R 34 Honda S2000, and Mazda RX-7 FD. There is no particular story to follow in this game. You move straight from track to track with some narration telling you your next steps as you progress through the game.
The glossy detail of the cars is impressive, the small details like watching the driver change gears, the car rocking around as you floor the accelerator at the starting line, or the drivers gasps for breath and blurry shakes when you slam into a wall give you a visual impression of error meaning you might take that hairpin turn a little slower on the next lap. It is important to pay attention to the the surrounding environment as hitting the sand or grass will slow you down considerably.
The drivers cockpit view camera isn't static either. If you slam on the barkes, you see a nice view of the windscreen as your thrown forward, as would be expected, you might actually see yourself moving forward in your seat trying to compensate at the same time.
There's music to enjoy in the game, but sometimes it's better left off as the sound of the engines alone is quite impressive as realistic, especially when turned up loud.
This game was well anticipated as a notable release and it has certainly delivered well. Fans of the driving / racing genre will have a copy if, if not already. Non racers can have some fun also with the highly playable and easy to start off gameplay which may lead to a later addiction. Worth Buying.
