HAL.dll is the MS Windows "Hardware abstract layer" library. It's a file that talks between the hardware components and the software components of your PC. The error generally means that there is a corruption with that file, caused by malicious software (Malware) or bad software, bad upgrade, moved location, etc.
The error appears on screen with varying messages.
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: C:\Windows\system32\hal.dll. Please re-install a copy of the above file."
"C:\Windows\System32\Hal.dll missing or corrupt: Please re-install a copy of the above file."
"Cannot find \Windows\System32\hal.dll"
"Cannot find hal.dll"
To fix this error:
bootcfg /rebuildWhen you see something similar to: 'Add installation to boot list (Yes/No/All)', type:
yesthen press enter. When you see the message similar to: 'Enter Load Identifier', type:
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition(or type the correct version that you have). Then press enter.
When asked to 'Enter OS load options', type the following:
/fastdetectThen press enter. If this all goes well, type:
exitThen press enter to restart your computer.
