How to clear CMOS

E-mail Print PDF

How to clear CMOSCMOS is short for Complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor. It is a chip on all motherboards that is powered by a small round battery. It contains information such as the date and time needed by the computer after the power is switched off. Quite often BIOS updates or hardware upgrades can cause system problems, requiring you to reset CMOS. This will revert all information stored back to the factory default settings. Before making these changes, you should try to rectify the problem within windows, or within the BIOS/CMOS utility first. To enter the BIOS utility, reboot the computer and at the first screen you see, press the 'del' key. (Some propriety computers, such as Dell have different keys that need to be pressed. See if there are instructions displayed at the start up screen, or consult your motherboard manual.) Make the relevant changes, or you can select 'restore factory settings'. If none of this works, try the following instructions.

There are two ways to do this.

  • Shutdown the computer normally.
  • Disconnect the computer power from the wall outlet (There is still power going into the computer when it is shutdown, you need to be sure that the PC is not powered at all).
  • Take the side panel off the computer.
  • How to clear CMOS1) Clear CMOS pins:

  • Locate two or three pins on the motherboard, usually near the battery, labeled 'clear CMOS', 'CLR CMOS' or something similar.
  • Put a jumper (a small piece of plastic with metal inside), or a metal screw driver on the pins (you want the metal to complete the circuit) hold it there for a few seconds then take off the jumper or screw driver.

  • How to clear CMOS2) Remove Battery:

  • Locate the small round battery and remove it. Wait a few minutes for the power to completely drain then insert the battery back into the battery housing.
  • Note: Some motherboards have a button to reset CMOS settings.
  • Place the side panel back on the case.
  • Plug in the power.
  • Turn the computer on.
  • Enter the BIOS/CMOS configuration utility when you first turn on the computer (usually by pressing the 'del' key). Make the relevant or needed changes, save the settings and exit.
